Our Nations Will Find Their Best Match With Sister Realms
We in the Realms possess similiar political institutions, forms of education and a Queen. The English language is in widespread use and is the main language of government. Through much of our political development, we have been closely aligned. Some of our shared convictions and goals are:
- fostering parliamentary systems and traditions
- good governance
- sustainable development
- ensuring respect for human rights
- maintaining proper judicial systems
- fighting crime, drug abuse and HIV/AIDS
- continuing to upgrade the role of women
- giving more options to young people
- and protecting the enviroment
Despite this litany of shared values, we have not had an organisation for ourselves since 1949. Instead, our politicians have followed courses in out foreign relations that cut across traditional ties. They create new ties with nations which for much of our shared history have been our enemies, or which do not share our view of the world. Therefore, it is only obvious that friction will arise, as described below for the E.U. and CariCom.
To many in the U.K., the E.U. as an institution is already overly centralised, yet there are always new Europhiles who want to bring an 'ever closer union among the peoples of Europe' (wording of the Maastricht Treaty). What is more, France and Germany are jostling with each other to be the main European player, to the exclusion of countries such as the U.K. which wants to preserve its sovereignty by opting out of the European Monetary Union. France essentially wants to create a union to challenge the 'Anglophone' world as well as fulfill its ambitions of being a nuclear superpower, while Germany is all idealistic about being at the 'centre of Europe'. And as the bickering continues, the E.U. seeks to expand further eastward, dragging the centre and heart of Europe with it. Developed countries like the U.K. will suffer as increasing numbers of people in underdeveloped regions in the east will cause the E.U. to redirect its resources. The richer countries of Europe will essentially be donors, which is not necessarily such a bad thing, but we are talking about at least nine countries in the near future with tens of millions of citizens. In contrast, the number of Her Majesty's citizens living in less developed and middle income countries is fewer than ten million.
In the Caribbean, politicians pretend that CariCom is the only future for the region. Maybe it never occurred to them, but the reason there is no other option is because they have never attempted to create another one. And if that lousy option is the Caribbean's only choice, it could as well not even bother itself about the future. CariCom is underfunded, incompetent, inefficient, and has not caught the imagiantion of the people. It is a politician's pipe dream, created for and by politicians. Progress moves at snail's pace. What is more, with the joining of Haiti, a majority of persons will be illiterate, poor, and non English speakers. And the politician's heads are so far up in the clouds, they do not even see the resentment that Haiti's joining will breed. English speakers will look upon as Haitians as cheap labour which will take their jobs. Furthermore, the fact that there is not a common language will inhibit the development of ties cultural and otherwise between the peoples of the already fractured West Indies, and create even further suspicion. One only needs to look at The Bahamas to see the effect that a small number of illegal Haitian immigrants are making. And the politicians want to promote freedom of movement? What planet are they living on?
For Oceania, there is no real movement for a union of any kind, although Australia and New Zealand our continually deepening their economic, political and defence ties.
In Canada's case, its main economic acitivity is centred around N.A.F.T.A., which is purely an economic agreement. Canada would not want to be a part of any political moves by the organisation anyway, as it is dominated by America. This means that the prospects of a union similiar in function to either the E.U. or CariCom for Canada any time in the future are bleak.
As can be seen, most of the Realms are committed to multi-faceted agreements and unions that the people are broadly dissatisfied with for a plethora of reasons (E.U. too centrist, CariCom too weak and divided), or which are limited in their scope and do not cover political, economic and and defence relations, despite their great importance to the country (N.A.F.T.A.). The one major exception is Oceania, where there is no organistion with the goals of the E.U. or CariCom. However, two Realms are increasing cooperation in all the areas covered by those two organistions, and there is very little objection to the moves in either country.
However one looks at it, we are a family of nations sharing the same values and Queen. There is very little animosity among our peoples: we have never fought a war against each other, rather alongside each other.
Even if we were to open our borders, there would not be a flood from the poorer regions to the richer regions. This is because there are so many rich regions, while the less rich regions are small in size and population. If all the persons living in the less developed and middle income regions were to migrate to the developed countries, that would aproximate to 2.25 million persons each, hardly over bearing. And that would not happen any way. Only a very small percentage of a country ever migrates. A realistic number might be 10% of that quoted above. And those persons who did migrate would speak English for the most part, and would soon assimilate.
As noted, our peoples for the most part are subjected to unions and agreements which are inadequate for the most part, or which they show little enthusiasm. It is time for a new order, and this website proposes an organisation for our peoples which will have meaning. As should be noted, this proposal was not developed at some great conference among politicians. It is an initiative of normal non-partisan citizens, and has already benefitted immensely from proposals from persons like yourself. As you move through the website, you will see that there are many opportunities to post your comments or to make suggestions to us directly. Soon, competitions will be launched for the development of a flag and a name for our organisation (even that has been left to the people). There are as yet no concrete proposals for the form of the alliance (see next page), although some suggestions are fowarded on this website. Above all else, this website hopes that one day, we will find the common voice and great power we had in the past when we were committed to working together. As we have learned at too great a price 'Divided we fall, united we stand'.
